Maths teacher to comedian may be an unlikely move, but Romesh Ranganathan made an expert calculation, and this sold-out date on his ‘Irrational’ tour only added to his already established success.

Ranganathan was absolutely at home on stage and held the room with an ease even more experienced stand-ups might envy, proving himself a master of observation.

He was hilarious in his rendition of stories from his own experience which, far from irrational, in fact showed up idiosyncratic encounters we could all relate to.

The diverse local audience received his classification of Shoreham as a place where ships come to die with good humour.

Anecdotes included dining out at Wagamama, cinema popcorn pricing, his parents’ intention in naming him Jonathan ‘to avoid discrimination’, his kids’ good behaviour charts and his proclivity for watching children’s films on his own at the cinema, all delivered in his own, easy no-nonsense style.

Hats off to Alain and his mates in the front row, graciously suffering the jest meted out by an opportunistic – and in this case frankly lucky Ranganathan.

Irrational is back in Sussex in the autumn – don’t hesitate to get a ticket; a good old belly laugh of an evening is guaranteed.
