When Katie is feeling grey, the colourful picture on her wall transports her to better places. Based on the children’s book by Polly Dunbar, Fly Away Katie was a spectacle of colours in a fantasy world.

Katie encounters some colourful characters including a caterpillar who sings a charming song about “It’s so good to be green”, a blue lion who sings the blues and a red bus. The young audience loved the yellow sun scene which incorporated bubbles to chase and twirling lights, as well as the tactile finali of a burst of confetti.

What really made the show stand out was the music by Tom Gray of Gomez, - an enchanting mixture of folk and blues and acoustic sounds.

Katie, a delicate rod puppet, was, along with others, skilfully operated by a three-strong team from Long Nose Puppets, makers of Shoe Baby, Penguin, and Arthur’s Dream Boat.

Katie seamlessly changed into different coloured clothes throughout before she eventually flew like a bird in her picture to the lyrics, “It’s easy to see we can be happy, colours and dreams are good for you and me."

After the show, children met the puppets and puppeteers from this uplifting, magical show.
