Staging Don Giovanni outdoors in June is going to produce a version lighter in every possible respect.

Gone are the deep shadows of an opera house: the open air theatre has a bare set with stepped platform and one arch. There is no orchestra and no chorus - a handful of actor singers and a gallant pianist tackle 18th-century libretto and score to create a production more opera buffa than opera seria but to considerable and entertaining effect.

Much of the fun comes from Matthew Kellett’s brilliant Leporello, who managed exquisitely-timed comedy with a baritone beautifully rich and full.

His shocked foil for the Catalogue Aria, Sarah Helsby Hughes, is a satisfying actress who wins more laughs for poor Elvira than usual.

Tenor David Menezes achieved a lyrical "il mio tesore" to produce an Ottavio that was touching instead of pathetic but nothing much saves Anna from great feats of sopranic hysteria.

Aimee Toshney sang a captivatingly fresh and sweet Zerlina while the charm of Victor Sgarbi as the permanently amorous Giovanni won sympathy against the odds.

Without props and atmospheric context, Heritage Opera were entirely heroic and pianist and musical director Benjamin Cox was simply astonishing.
