THE North Carolina-based trio proved less can be more, with a beautifully minimalist show.
The bedroom-pop outfit have gained quite a large following among the niche lo-fi scene this side of the pond in recent years, and are embarking on their first UK headline tour.
An eager crowd bustled in as frontman and guitarist, Mat Cothran, introduced his band.
A warm, intimate feel was instantly created by Cothran, who was joined on stage by a nameless Napoleon Dynamite-lookalike on bass, and Delaney Mills, impressively juggling synth and drums to complete the line-up.
A pumping drum loop opened the show as a stripped-back version of No More Sad Songs built. Cothran’s clean, tinny guitar perfectly complemented Mills’s haunting synth notes as the group played through most recent LP, Holo Pleasures/California Dreamin’, as well older material.
After one of many humorous interactions between Cothran and the crowd, new track, Phillip, was premiered, which received a very warm reception.
A droned feedback and reverse-delay-driven solo pricked up the ears in the room, before a long instrumental broke out of Weird Honey to bring the night to a perfect ending.
