Worthing Theatres struck rich again with its knack of unearthing little gems. This zany mini-musical by Les Enfants Terribles proved to be a delightful piece of theatre - mixing murder with Edwardian music hall acts.

It blended Gothic humour and Grand Guignol bloodthirstiness with a witty rhyming script and songs that hinted at Sondheim and Kurt Weill. The cast of nine not only acted their socks off, they also provided their own musical accompaniment.

The Emcee, with a penchant for word juggling, led the rousing Welcome To The Empire, which introduced the participating acts – all of whom had secrets and a reason to kill the owner of the Empire Music Hall.

Each told their back story through song or, in one case, through mime. In doing so they revealed their secrets, all of which bound them to the murdered man.

But who was the killer? Could it have been the magician, the knife thrower, mime artist or psychotic ventriloquist? And of course one must not forget the Cerebus Sisters – Siamese Triplets with their striptease act.

The absence of a programme prevented the performers and creative team from being credited. They deserve the highest praise for a wacky night of entertainment.
