Aged just 19, Rex Orange County - aka Alex O’Connor - is already building a unique place for himself on the music scene.
With literally millions of hits on YouTube and sell out concerts across the UK, it is not difficult to understand the reason for his success – a fresh approach and undeniable songwriting ability.
He may not yet be the finished article but this young singer/songwriter held the interest of his audience from the opening chord to the end – something even the most experienced performers are often incapable of achieving.
There was a little bit of everything in the blend from catchy harmonies, soul, jazz, hip hop and exuberant pop each with its own flavour. Stand out songs were Edition, Loving is Easy and Sunflower with the evening being rounded off with two favourites Best Friend and Happiness.
A former pupil at the famous music college, the Brit School, OC, as he was known at school, has already released two albums and numerous singles. There’s plenty more in the pipeline.
The only slight criticism was that the soundsystem did not do justice to the music as the vocals had to be run louder than usual to compensate for the fans singing along.
I expect this artist to be around for a long time to come.
