The Argus: Brighton Festival Thumb

"Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick, and think of you."

So begins Cyndi Lauper's classic 1980s track Time After Time, the theme for Drew Taylor's one-man monologue of the same name.

Creating a buzz with his entry in heavily-sequined costume and high heels, Taylor’s story merged two very separate measures of time - his typical day and his life story.

Intelligent and witty, occasionally cute and often fierce, sadly the tale failed to fully grab the audience in the intimate space of The Basement.

This was definitely not the case with the second act on the bill.

Originating from Spain, the idea from Los Torreznos was simple - take the audience through 35 minutes of live performance by literally counting every single second in that measure of time - all 2,100 of them.

On paper it looks daring, if not plain daft. But, with variations in vocal rhythm and physical delivery, puzzlement quickly turned to barnstorming laughter.

Bizarre, witty, playful - all of the above, yet some of the most pleasurable moments came in looking at the audience's reactions to such tomfoolery.

Most lucky enough to see this will be counting the seconds until their next appearance.
