The Southwick Players’ comedy showcase certainly lived up to its title provoking laughs aplenty.

With firmdirection from H Reeves, the large cast slickly performed a pot pourri of humourous sketches and musical numbers.

Classic sketches, nostalgically familiar, from the pens of Rowan Atkinson, Ronnie Barker, Peter Cook, Victoria Wood and the Pythons were re-enacted. Some had dated, while others gained freshness. The Cheese Shop was tediously unfunny but The End Of The World came across as far more hilarious than when first seen in Beyond The Fringe. David Otaway and Rob Harber brought back the sexual fantasies of Pete and Dud.

While most of the offerings entertained, a couple of items failed to lift off, and the running sketch with groan-inducing jokes from Ron Common’s Quasimodo needed some trimming.

Highlights included Matt Grant welcoming the audience to Hell, compere Jamie Collins’ impersonation of Frank Spencer and the Dracula monologue from H Reeves.

Outstanding musical items came from Sarah Milner, firstly with On My Phone, a wicked parody of a Les Mis number, and then with her violin playing in competition with a Hoover. The house was brought down by Gotta Have A Gimmick – the stripper’s number from Gypsy.
