The last time I saw Boothby Graffoe, it was just him, his guitar and a bunch of silly songs.
But this performance was completely different. Firstly, he was accompanied by extremely talented musician Nick Pynn, and has expanded his repertoire for his latest tour, Bang! Is This Your Vehicle, Sir?
Secondly, though expecting to fall off my chair with laughter, the evening was rather sedate and the atmosphere felt a bit flat.
There is no doubt both these men are very good at what they do and they have a hardcore following to match.
But the evening seemed to miss the mark somewhat. Graffoe was reminiscent of Billy Bragg and the subject of politics was brought into the show more than once.
The old material was still the best and Lullaby didn’t fail in making half the audience jump.
The funniest song of the set was Girlfriend In A Fridge, requested by a member of the audience during the encore.
Even a bit of audience participation in the guise of a singalong didn’t really get people going.
Graffoe and Pynn are both clever men but the sounds coming from their instruments were far more captivating than the lyrics.
Maybe I was missing the point, or maybe it was because I was expecting something entirely different, but I left the venue a little disappointed. Although I have the feeling I was probably in the minority.
