If 1,500 people, packed in a concert hall, blink at the same time, would it make a sound?
The answer, as it turns out, is no. Even if one of them is holding a microphone next to his eyes, while barely containing his mirth at the ridiculousness of the experiment he has somehow managed to instigate.
Jon Richardson has built a career out of being grumpy and obsessive about small details but his real strength is the warmth that shines through his humour, not least in moments like the blink experiment.
His fortunes have been soaring since he featured at the much smaller Dome Studio two years ago but that warmth means he has kept the ability to create an intimate atmosphere in a bigger venue.
Not that he hasn’t been finding more small things in life to be enraged by – even enraging himself by getting enraged, if you see what I mean.
Things like people pronouncing “an onion” as “a nunion”, or when his housemates wash the wine glasses up after the greasy cooking pan (leading to pork-and-leek-flavoured wine), or the ridiculousness of olives – not to mention his experiments with tantric yoga.
Blinking brilliant stuff.
