It was a White Stripes' cover of their song Walking With A Ghost which first brought identical twin sisters Tegan And Sara to the wider public's attention.

The Calgary-born pair have now spent 13 years in the music business and have five albums to their credit, having first got into performing when they won a garage band competition as teenagers.

The pair's latest album, The Con, was recorded last year in Portland, Oregon, with Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla.

"I take the blame for naming The Con," says Tegan Quin. "I felt or feel like a con from time to time. It was my attempt at suggesting that perhaps we all, or more specifically I, have different sides to me."

Drawing comparisons with the punky bite of Sleater-Kinney and the folksiness of Indigo Girls, the 14-track album is based around the twin vocals of the 26 year-olds, who were born eight minutes apart.

Their songs discuss the knotty world of relationships, backed up by punky guitars and a judicious smattering of keyboards.

The album was recorded after 18 months of touring, with the girls focusing on keeping the songs as close to the original demos as possible. Among the special guests were bassist Matt Sharp, of The Rentals and formerly Weezer, Hunter Burgan of AFI, and Walla's bandmate Jason McGerr on drums.

Film-maker Angela Kendall was also brought in to record the two months of graft on the new record, which was released on Monday.

Their previous four albums had already brought the pair to the attention of artists including Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, The Killers and Ryan Adams, who have all taken them out on tour as a support act, before Jack White recorded their song as the title track to the White Stripes' Walking With A Ghost EP.
