Glamorous and likeable, Jenkins couldn’t be further away from the stereotypically frumpy, aloof opera singer.
This has translated into a remarkably commercial appeal; she is the only singer to have held positions one, two and three on the classical chart and her debut album sold more than 30,000 copies in its first week.
Born in Neath, South Wales, Jenkins has embraced her crossover success and seems intent on making opera digestible to all. “I do not understand where the idea came from that opera is only for privileged people,” she says.
“I am as happy singing before 70,000 people at the Millennium Stadium as I am in front of a few hundred in a small concert hall.”
- Starts 6.30pm. Tickets £25-£45, call 0844 847 1515.
