WITH the Top 40 charts full of songs with shallow and pandering lyrics, it’s refreshing to hear a band who sing from their heart.

Oceans write songs full of feeling that take you to a special place. Here, Oceans’ singer Zach Silver tells Lottie Taylor about their new EP On & On and how Brighton shaped the band.

How did you all meet?

We’re all friends that know each other from the famous ‘Kings Mansions’ flats on Brighton’s Seafront. There we would jam and party, and, in a brief summary, it all started from there.

How would you describe your sound to people who haven’t heard your music yet?

When I joined the band we knew that the sound we were essentially going to produce was going to be very different to that of any other alt-rock band. This was due to the range of interests within the band and my interest in my RnB.

The sound had to be intriguing, something to draw in the attention of each and every person in the room, in order for them to make their decision about whether they like the music. Because we knew at first it would be a shock.

Do you write as a group or does one person take charge of the songwriting?

Writing as a group can sometimes prove very efficient as you get more influence from the different backgrounds of each member.

For example our song Electrified was the first song we wrote together in a rehearsal studio and it certainly hosts the widest range of styles out of our tracks.

However a lot of the time it’s easier to write in pairs, especially if there is a very specific vibe we are going for within a song.

How did you find starting out in the Brighton and London scene?

The Brighton scene is very encouraging and it truly shaped who we are as a band. We can’t help but wonder what we’d sound like if it wasn’t for the Brighton music scene.

Some of the best shows we’ve ever done have been in London but it really can be give or take there. It’s so big and unpredictable.

You released your EP On & On on Saturday; how’s the reception to it been?

To celebrate the release of ‘On & On’ we hosted the launch at Brighton’s Green Door Store on Saturday. At the EP launch we left out lots of EP’s for people to take for free and practically every single one was taken.

We’ve also had an overwhelming amount of publications take a shine to ‘On & On’ which is great and we feel very proud for it.

You have played up and down the country - where has the best gig you’ve played so far been?

Choosing a favourite gig is a tough one. However, out of the top few, our EP launch would have to be our number one choice. We co-hosted it with The Green Door Store on the weekend of Brighton Pride and the reception was unbelievable.

What’s up next for you guys?

We have a lot planned for the duration of summer including boat parties and more, all in order to promote our EP On & On to its fullest potential. We also have a tour planned for the end of September, so there is no resting for us.
