The dishevelled punk poet and self-styled “bard of Salford” made his name in the late 1970s, performing his quick-fire a cappella poetry alongside the likes of The Fall, Joy Division and Elvis Costello.
The following decade saw him battling heroin addiction, living with the late Velvet Underground singer Nico in Manchester and appearing with the Honey Monster in a couple of TV adverts.
Through all of this, he has rarely stopped writing, on his favoured typewriter, or performing. He appears in Brighton on a rare headline tour.
