Having begun life with a “fun” production of Gilbert And Sullivan’s The Pirates Of Penzance, as performed by an enthusiastic vicar and his parishoners, Opera della Luna has been producing idiosyncratic versions of the world’s most famous operettas.
Die Fledermaus, which has been newly translated and directed by Jeff Clarke, follows the story of Dr Falke, who seeks revenge after being left to wander home drunk and dressed as a bat, by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein.
Eisenstein is invited to a risqué party thrown by an outrageous Russian aristocrat, and encouraged to seduce a mysterious Hungarian countess – his own wife in disguise – all soundtracked by music by Johann Strauss II.
