There is more ballet in Sussex – this time in Eastbourne – as the ballet theatre company from Russia’s second city arrives to perform the classical ballet, Nutcracker, about toys that come alive on New Year’s Eve. The tale of Clara and her doll is set to a lavish Tchaikovsky score which will be performed by a live orchestra.
The original libretto was adapted from ETA Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg on December 18, 1892, on a double-bill with Tchaikovsky’s opera, Iolanta.
Nowadays The St Petersburg company, formed by Russian entrepreneur Konstantin Tachkin in 1994, is made up mostly of graduates from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in the city.
