The joy of large pants, a free nagging class, middle-aged drinking... no subject is out of bounds for The Grumpy Old Women.

The trio – comedian Jenny Eclair, actress and singer Kate Robbins and actress Susie Blake - are bringing the fourth leg of their hit UK tour called Fifty Shades of Beige to Worthing this month and plan to “knock more sense in to the nation” and make their audience “bask in an orgy of fury and big laughs”.

They will discuss the art of Grumpy Grooming, beards for women: which style will suit you?, navigating the smorgasbord of worry, voluntary euthanasia versus retirement, and how to customise an unwanted pole dancing kit.

“It’s great fun,” says Kate, who has appeared in ITV’s Where The Heart Is and Casualty on the BBC as well memorably voicing a variety of characters on the satirical puppet show Spitting Image and Channel 4’s risqué show Eurotrash ( it her idea to add regional British accents to translations for the European video clips). “It’s written by Jenny and it’s a mixture of sketches and characterisations and songs. I get to sing a song at the end, which I love.

“At the moment, I haven’t even seen the script for this show, so I don’t know what we’ll be wearing. I’m slightly dreading finding out,” she laughs, “because in the last one we came on looking like we’d landed from another planet and we ended up in onesies. Onesies! It’s hard wearing one of those, I can tell you.”

She adds, “It’s not just a show for women and it’s certainly not anti-men – we get lots of men in the audience. We talk about things that get up our noses and we’re all different.

“Jenny shouts a lot – it’s just what she does – and she talks about what she was like before HRT and killed small dogs (I’m joking!). And Susie is quite posh: she can't help being a snob.

“I'm a bit more northern and interested in sex than the other two!”

Jenny, who this year has also been around the UK on her How To Be A Middle Aged Woman (Without Going Insane) tour, which continues in July, helped develop the original Grumpy Old Women TV show on BBC2, which spawned a series of spin-offs thanks to its popularity.

Big names including Alison Steadman, Lesley Joseph, Linda Robson, Ann Widdecombe, Maureen Lipman, Sheila Hancock and Germaine Greer contributed, with the first live show produced in 2005. It proceeded to go on a sellout national tour.

Jenny, who in 1995 was the first woman to win the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award, has been on the panel of ITV chat show Loose Women and came third in the 2010 series of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Susie Blake, who is related to the late actor John Mills, is perhaps most famous as the continuity announcer on the BBC’s Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, when she would make polite announcements such as, “We’d like to apologise to viewers in the North. It must be awful for them.” Since then, she has played Bev Unwin in Coronation Street and Hilary Nicholson in Mrs Brown’s Boys.

And Kate, a first cousin once removed of Paul McCartney, began her career in the long-running soap Crossroads, when she played a pop singer recording a single in the motel’s recording studio. The song, called More Than In Love, was released as a single and became a major hit, reaching No2 in the charts.

“Oh, don’t remind me of Crossroads,” laughs Kate. “My acting was so wooden it did a disservice to trees.

“I’ve been a singer all my life but Grumpy Old Women is out and out comedy.

“It’s a nice life, on tour for three months. We’re not like those divas who ask for outlandish things – all we ask for is no crisps and lots of salads, but then with all the dressings and extra bits to the salads there are so many calories we might as well have eaten the crisps. And then we drink some wine, and then a bit more because we are all a bit greedy.

“It’s great the show is such a success. It has such a lot of warmth to it. That’s what I love.”
