A HISTORIC PALACE and museum is set to enjoy a boost in visitors after becoming an attractive location for filmmakers.

Brighton’s Royal Pavilion and Museum is renowned for its enchanting architecture and exotic beauty, so it comes as no surprise that it has started to flourish in the lucrative arena of filmmaking.

Popstar Harry Styles and the cast and crew of romantic drama My Policeman were pictured in the filming in the Royal Pavilion Gardens in May and the attraction is once again being used as a movie set.

The Pavilion is currently closed to visitors to allow the filming of an unknown project to take place and it will reopen on Monday, July 5.

Hedley Swain, chief executive of the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust, said it makes “complete financial sense” for the charitable trust to open up its historic buildings to filmmakers.

He said: “Brighton is a very attractive place for filmmakers to come.

“I think it’s also the case that filmmakers at the moment in Britain, because of Covid, are finding it more difficult to film abroad and the Pavilion stands in quite well as an exotic foreign location.

“As an independent trust, we can negotiate perhaps a little bit harder and a little bit faster.

“This year, because we won’t have the foreign tourists in the same way, it makes complete financial sense for us to do those sorts of deals.

“It will bring us wonderful free advertising, but it also brings important income in the city.”

Hedley says the city has the potential to put itself on the map for being the next big filming location.

“I think if Brighton can do a good job overall of giving the impression, then that will be great and welcomed news.

“We all know don’t we that if you see a pier on telly, it’s normally Brighton Pier and Brighton seafront.

“I think people recognise that and it’s great that we can support it.

“My Policeman, which obviously none of us can talk about, it’s set in Brighton. So, when that comes out, it will be a wonderful advert for Brighton.”
