I am puzzled by the letter from Lesley Kite praising Simon Kirby for being a good MP for Brighton Kemptown (The Argus, December 18).

Some of Ms Kite’s previous letters give her address as Clarendon Villas in Hove*. Mr Kirby is not the MP for Hove, and not even the neighbouring MP.

It is worth reflecting on Mr Kirby’s record: he has only backed eight of the 875 early day motions in the current session of Parliament. Of those eight, he felt motions on “Argentinian Debt Default” and the “Awa Tribe In Brazil” were more worthy of his support than ones on protecting the police, NHS or schools from cuts imposed by his Government.

Mr Kirby is undoubtedly an assiduous constituency MP, but he cannot dissociate himself from the damage done to our schools by Michael Gove, the disastrous management of the economy by George Os-borne, the privatisation of the NHS by Andrew Lansley and Jeremy Hunt, or the removal of benefits from disabled people by Ian Duncan Smith.

Mr Kirby has loyally trooped into the division lobby in support of his Conservative Government colleagues month in, month out since May 2010, and if the polls are to be believed he will pay the price come the next general election.
