While working in Brighton’s Churchill Square last Christmas, I visited some of my old working places and haunts from the late 1960s up until the early 1980s. It was a nostalgic trip.
One of my first trips was to nearby Castle Street. The year was 1964 and I was developing and printing photos at Paragon Photographic Services. Churchill Square was beginning to be built, Western Road was the main shopping centre and all the big shops were there. The toilets were still under the Clock Tower.
My next port of call was Montpelier Road, which held the most memories for me. I worked in a nightclub as a resident DJ. I am sure many people will remember the Bonsoir Club. I used the name Paul John. Another DJ was Mark Allen.
I remember the disco sounds of the 1970s: Abba, Boney M, Gloria Gayner and more. There was a tear in my eye as the memories flooded back. This was the best time of my life. I was in my 20s, without a care in the world.
How Brighton has changed. It is so young now and so noisy. Is it better now? To be honest, I don’t think so. It’s not the Brighton I remember.
