Drivers face a week of traffic delays because of a ruptured gas main.
A spokeswoman for Southern Gas Networks said the “controlled gas escape” on Sackville Road in Hove was caused by a faulty gas main in the middle of the road.
Work to repair the leak will begin today (February 18) and will continue for a week. Until the repairs are complete the northbound carriageway will be closed.
Northbound traffic will be diverted right along Blatchington Road, left into Goldstone Villas, left into Clarendon Villas and then back into Sackville Road. Southbound traffic will be unaffected.
Chloe Boyce, a spokeswoman for Southern Gas Networks, said: "We've agreed with the local authority to carry out this work to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local community.
“We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused by our roadworks and thank motorists for their patience."
She said the leak posed “no risk to the public”.
