A music expert has said children should brush their teeth to Gangnam Style for the best results.

Jim Williams, who lectures at the Brighton institute of Modern Music (BIMM), has identified PSY’s megahit as the top song for youngsters to clean their teeth to.

Working with dental professionals, Ivor Novello nominee Mr Williams has devised a musical formula for brushing teeth.

It is based on the equation, 2(V+B+C)+M8+2C+, which works out the perfect pattern of beats required in a song to deliver the right number of brush strokes needed for a complete clean.

Mr Williams said that the perfect song to brush your teeth to has eight bars of music, followed by another two sets of four bars.

The song must also include a double chorus and middle “bridging” section, known as a double eight.

Good brushing

Gangnam Style, which recently became the most watched item ever posted on YouTube with more than one billion views, came out on top, followed by Rihanna’s Diamond, Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To know, Olly Murs’ Troublemaker, Wiley’s Heatwave and Cheryl Cole’s Call My Name.

Other songs in the top ten included Carly Rae Jepson’s Call Me Maybe and Sam and the Womp’s Bom Bom.

Dental expert, Tina Tanna, said: “Children must brush at least 35 times on each side of the mouth – using seven strokes in five areas – to ensure their teeth and gums stay healthy.

Lesley Stonier, senior brand manager for Aquafresh, said: “Brushing teeth is essential to children’s oral health but it can be a battle for mums and dads to get them to do it properly.

"This new formula and top songs to brush to are designed to help put the fun into brushing time.

"Using these tunes to establish a good teeth cleaning routine with your children will set them up with good dental hygiene for life.”
