A campaign to help make up a shortfall in new blood donors has been a success.
More than 3,700 people across Sussex signed up to give blood following a drive launched by NHS Blood and Transplant.
The national 100,000 New Donors in 100 Days campaign was created earlier this month following a sharp decline in the number of younger donors signing up in 2012.
It has already passed its target, with 1,834 people in West Sussex and 1,923 in East Sussex backing the drive.
Jon Latham, assistant director for marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We rely on new blood donors to keep coming forward as we need more than 1,000 new registrations every day to replace those donors who can no longer donate.”
Anyone aged 17 to 65, weighing more than 7st 12lb, and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.
