I read with interest your article about high air pollution and problems in Newhaven (The Argus, February 11).

The reasons given for this are probably a cause of the problem: an increase in passing traffic and regular traffic hold-ups and congestion.

You mention that air quality is linked to quality of life and report the related serious and sometimes life-threatening illnesses which can occur.

But are we missing out on another perhaps key factor and reason for this unacceptable risk to the health of Newhaven residents and those in the surrounding area?

What is that I spot? Could it be Newhaven’s latest architectural masterpiece?

I am of course referring to the Newhaven incinerator.

What is that big tall thing on top chucking out?

And let’s not forget the additional traffic this has brought to the area – lorries bringing in the delightful waste of others.

Maybe I am being cynical, maybe it’s just a coincidence that air pollution in the area has increased in line with the opening and usage of this wonderful creation.

Someone should investigate.
