A woman has been charged with stealing a dog in a busy city centre street.

Helen Doyle, 35, of The Crestway, Brighton, has been charged with the theft which happened on the Old Steine, Brighton, on Sunday February 17.

She is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday February 20.

Officers received a report from a woman at around 6.50pm on Sunday that her dog had been stolen from outside Sainsbury's in Old Steine.

A woman was arrested on Tuesday 19 February on suspicion of theft following investigation work by officers and the dog was recovered.

PC Andrea Leahy of Brighton and Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Incidents of this nature in which dogs are stolen from where they are tied up are very unusual but anyone who is concerned is advised to leave their dog where they can see it or leave someone with the dog at all times."
