Eleven major roads across Sussex will not be improved in the foreseeable future.

Key routes in Bognor, Shoreham, Worthing and Horsham that had been earmarked for improvement by West Sussex County Council have been shelved as being too expensive.

Instead the council said the lion’s share of funding to schemes in future would have to come from developers, so only the most important projects would be done, on roads that were the most dangerous or had the most accidents.

Major routes that will no longer be on the list for work include Long Furlong, which is used to bypass Worthing from the A27, and the A24.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “These schemes were intended to improve the transport network through congestion reduction, by-passing urban areas, providing access to development opportunities or reducing accidents.

“Following changes in funding for major transport schemes by the Government, we have taken the opportunity to review the list and consider schemes for retention.

“The decision to rescind a scheme does not prejudice any improvements scheme being implemented in the future, if they were deemed necessary and had sufficient funding.”

The A24 Alliance, a group set up to campaign against work being done on the road, argued that only small-scale schemes were needed.

Peter Finch, from the alliance, said: “It was a hugely expensive white elephant of a scheme and it’s such a pity that it has taken the council so long to come to the only sensible decision.”
