Charley Gander complains that rail commuters demand too much (Letters, February 15).

Just what do they demand?

1 – That trains run on time;

2 – A seat is always available;

3 – That they aren’t jam-packed like sardines;

4 – Railways fares are reasonable;

5 – No computer research is necessary to find the cheapest ticket.

None of these demands are presently met.

Charley Gander’s last suggestion is probably the most impracticable: “Try driving or getting a job closer to home.”

Would s/he enjoy driving to London every day?

And people cannot switch jobs as easily as s/he suggests; commuters are arm-twisted by railway companies into paying higher fares since they have no other way of travelling.

That’s what I call extortion.
