No wonder Brighton loves its own. Rizzle Kicks are the poets of the positive reinforcement generation.

Wednesday night’s barnstorming of the Dome was to promote Audio Active, the youth music and arts organisation – from whose hip-hop foundation the boys are graduates – which works imaginatively with young people to overcome challenges in their lives.

Firmly rooted in the cheeriness of Daisy Age, Rizzle Kicks’ jubilant musicality and infectious playfulness make all that guns ’n’ laydeez stuff that came later look a mite silly. Hip-hop is fun – and Jordan and Harley are having a lot of it.

A skanking James Bond number and a bit of Harry Potter were nods to the audience demographic, and Jordan’s question, “Is anyone here over 18?” was mostly met with yelps from accompanying parents.

The reference to bras in the air during Down With The Trumpets was on the aspirational side, many of the keenest dancers not needing one – yet.

While the old favourites were guaranteed to please (and if there’s one criticism of this gig it’s that it was short on fresh material), new song That’s Classic, a cheeky samba with trademark high-energy verbals and a lot of bounce proved that Rizzle Kicks are a success story which just keeps on getting better.
