Brainy BHASVIC students are more likely to get into Cambridge University compared to their counterparts at Eton, St Paul’s and Westminster.
Recently published admission statistics from Cambridge University show BHASVIC students achieved a one-in-two success rate when applying to study at the top university in 2011.
BHASVIC College, in Dyke Road, sent 38 Cambridge-bound applications from its students in that year, with 19 places offered and 18 accepted.
The famous Eton College, whose former pupils include Prince Harry and David Cameron, saw one in every 2.4 applications accepted, while Westminster achieved one in every 2.28.
Only 13 schools achieved more places – ten of which were leading public schools.
They included Oxford High School, Guildford High School and King Edward VI Camp High School for Boys, who all scored an impressive one in every 1.55 applications.
Support system
Andrea Chlebikova, a former BHASVIC student who is currently studying chemistry at Cambridge, praised the support she received while studying at the college.
She said: “The support system for Oxbridge applications at BHASVIC recognises that the universities are not looking for applicants who have been artificially trained for the application process.
“Instead, the BHASVIC focus is on identifying potential applicants early, and then providing them with plenty of opportunities to inform their decision, like organising trips and inviting affiliates from the universities.
“This is on top of useful advice both before and throughout the application process.”
Outstanding achievement
The figures will please money-conscious parents who deliberate on where to send their young and talented academics this September.
While a term at BHASVIC is free, Eton college parents will find themselves forking out more than £30,000 for their child’s education and more than £11,000 at Oxford High School.
Christopher Thomson, BHASVIC principal, said: “This is an outstanding achievement and our students themselves deserve enormous credit for it.”
