Last month I wrote about some of the steps involved in creating a planting plan for a new border. We’re doing some planting design work of our own at Uppark and we’d be happy to talk you through the process if you fancy a visit. In the meantime, here are some more tips.

Having decided on colours and analysed your soil type, the next step is to focus on plant selection. I start by looking at shrubs and perennials, and then bulbs. I generally miss out the annuals, because they can be time-consuming and usually only last until the frosts arrive. They can be useful to fill gaps or provide instant colour, but generally perennials and bulbs are consistent performers and provide better value.

Consider how much colour you want and when. A plant which flowers fleetingly may not be the right plant for you, especially if you are looking for longevity. Try to get the most out of the space, so you can enjoy it for as long as possible.

Next, create a structure within the planting com-position, starting with a “backbone” of shrubs. Think about planting one evergreen for every three deciduous shrubs and research flowering time. When are you likely to want to spend the most time in the garden? As a visitor attraction, this is a key time for us at Uppark, when many people are on holiday here, so our gardens need to look great.

Perennials are very good value plants. They are quick to establish, and will be ready to lift and divide into more plants within a few years. You can either retain these new plants for use elsewhere in your garden or swap with friends and neighbours.

Elsewhere in the garden, we’re cutting the grass at least once a week now. Grass grows vigorously so keep on top of your lawns with a weekly trim. Spend an hour or so hoeing the weeds first thing, and the smaller seedlings will bake and shrivel up in no time.

Lastly, start thinking about planting out your tender plants towards the end of May, but keep an eye on frost and provide protection where necessary.
