THE article headlined "School slated by inspectors" (The Argus, November 22) does not give a full and true picture of the achievements of pupils at Patcham High School.

The school has only been given a "notice to improve" because the exam results are not yet satisfactory.

In the other five categories - personal development and wellbeing, teaching and learning, curriculum, care, guidance and support, and leadership and management - the school was judged to be satisfactory, with many good features.

We, as governors, know Patcham is a happy and vibrant school, where every child matters.

There is an excellent sports programme, including the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The school has specialist status in English, art and media and results have risen sharply in these areas. There are also many opportunities for cultural development, from Latin club to international trips and exchange visits.

We gained the Silver Healthy School Award for "emotional health and wellbeing", and are approaching the Gold level - this reflects the care, support and guidance provided for all students, whatever their abilities and needs.

The School Council flourishes and students contribute to the community in many ways.

They are also involved as members of the school's governing body committee, "Every Child Matters".

Our training school status is helping develop teachers' skills across the board.

All these were praised by the inspectors.

The governors fully believe that, under the strong leadership of Paula Sargent, the school is making fast and sustained progress.

Policies are in place to improve the exam results, while helping every child to develop their full potential both as an individual and as a member of the community.
