A charity supporter is aiming to raise £10,000 for charity – by travelling 101 miles along the South Downs Way on his mobility scooter.

James Pagram from Eastbourne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when he was 33 and needs the scooter to help him get around.

The 48-year-old, whose symptoms include problems with mobility and extreme tiredness, will set off from Winchester on August 9 and expects to arrive at Beachy Head on August 12.

Two friends will be accompanying him on their bikes throughout the route, which is totally off-road and cross country.

Mr Pagram said being given the scooter gave him the idea for the challenge.

He said: “Getting outside on my scooter has given me freedom and done a lot for my mood.

“It makes me feel better and has helped me to come to terms with my MS.

“I hope this trip will encourage people with this illness to realise their potential and to get out more and enjoy the beautiful countryside we live in.

“It would be fantastic if people affected by MS can come along and meet us along the route, and possibly join in for a few miles.”

Mr Pagram, who is a member of the Eastbourne and South Wealden branch of the MS Society, is hoping to get support from corporate sponsors to help him hit his target.

His family and friends are also rallying around to help.

All money will go to the MS Society, which supports people living with multiple sclerosis in the UK.

Most people with the disease are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s.

The charity is fighting to improve treatment and care in order to help people with MS take control of their lives.
