Barbecue season may fast be approaching but it seems bonfires are still causing a nuisance.

In the last year Hastings Borough Council has received 68 complaints from residents regarding bonfires.

Neighbours have complained smoke and ash from bonfires have prevented them from opening windows, hanging washing out to dry and being able to enjoy their own gardens.

Coun Jay Kramer, lead member for environment and safety, commented: “Smoke really does cause annoyance to neighbours, especially from damp bonfires, so please be considerate and speak with your neighbours before you have a bonfire.

“The council offers a garden waste scheme, which is available to most residents.

However, we would always recommend that people consider home composting first.”
