Complaints about Brighton and Hove’s uncollected rubbish have overwhelmed a Brighton MP’s email inbox, forcing him to upgrade – twice.

The “huge volume” of correspondence from MP Simon Kirby’s constituents in Brighton Kemptown has seen him request a larger inbox for the second time.

The MP said he gets about 200 emails a day from constituents.

Mike Weatherly, MP for Hove, has also had to request extra space after receiving up to 1,000 emails a day.

They include emails from one constituent who feared M15 were watching him through his TV.

Mr Kirby said: “The huge volume of correspondence I receive from constituents means that my inbox is regularly full.

“I am happy to hear from constituents about any issue and therefore do not regard their concerns as vexatious, although some circular emails which contain false information are frustrating.”

He said many emails were from council housing tenants living in overcrowded accommodation.

Bins not being collected and birds and foxes breaking bags and leaving mess on the streets was another key concern, he said.

Mr Weatherly said he received anything from 200 to 1,000 emails a day, which were most commonly about tax, animal rights and the King Alfred Leisure Centre.

Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, said: “It’s common for me to get hundreds of emails a day on subjects as diverse as the BHASVIC playing fields and the proposed badger cull, to economic challenges and the shortage of housing.”
