Little Freya-Lee and her mum Donna Stowe were the first to make use of a new hospital unit that provides extra support for babies.

The transitional care unit at the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards was created to enhance the support already provided by the hospital’s special care baby unit (SCBU).

The new unit allows babies who are no longer unwell enough to need SCBU care but who still need a little extra help to be looked after under the supervision of the SCBU staff. Parents can also stay on the unit.

Ms Stowe, from Hailsham, said: “When I first came in I was a little nervous, but everything has been brilliant, I couldn’t fault it.”

Staff nurse Fiona Skilton, who has been looking after baby Freya-Lee, said: “Freya- Lee was a perfect candidate for our new transitional care unit as she only needed a little time on SCBU after she was born.

“Moving mum and baby into our new unit allows us to offer them the right amount of care, but also gives mum and baby the time they need together.”
