An artist to the stars has recreated the iconic West Pier – using only Dr Marten’s boot leather and laces.
Brighton-based Ben Duarri, who has been commissioned by rapper Jay-Z and singer Grace Jones, produced the piece for the iconic footwear brand’s new city store.
Dubbed The Screen Prince the artist is known for creating images of famous musicians by using their song lyrics.
The West Pier piece is made up of words which embody Brighton’s rebellious streak, including lyrics from The Who’s My Generation.
It hangs pride of place in the Prince Albert Street store, which was officially opened last night.
Mr Duarri said: “The pier still stands despite previous attempts to crush it.
“The giant phoenix, made up of starlings, is intended as a symbol of coming together in these times of austerity and sticking together through thick and thin. It also illustrates Brighton as a creative melting pot, which has bridged many cultures and created new ones.”
