A woman was killed and a man seriously hurt in a three-car crash on Saturday morning.
The accident happened on the A22 near Uckfield, at the junction with the A272.
A grey Ford Mondeo estate being driven north was involved in a collision with a white Ford Transit van travelling south.
The Mondeo then collided with a Mercedes C320, which was also travelling south.
A 59-year-old woman, a passenger in the Mondeo, died at the scene.
The driver, a 64-year-old man from Kingston in Surrey, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
The van driver, a 49-year-old local man, and the Mercedes driver, a 59- year-old from Croydon, had minor injuries.
The road was closed for most of the day while emergency services cleared the scene and tried to work out how the accident happened.
Witnesses are asked to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Ankara.
