Lauren Schofield had a difficult start to the year.
The 13-year-old was the subject of a distressing incident on the way to school in March.
Although not physically injured the trauma of police interviews knocked her confidence greatly.
Determined not to let it beat her she threw herself into her school work and extracurricular activities.
Proud mum Caroline has now nominated the brave teenager for an Argus Achievement Award.
She said: “Lauren has achieved so much this year, I’m really proud of her.
“I wasn’t sure which category to nominate her in but I just thought it would be nice for her to get some sort of recognition.”
As well as excelling at school the teen has been named a “pupil leader”. The role requires her to take responsibility for many of the school’s fundraising efforts and to liaise with local charities.
She is also on the Eastbourne Youth Forum, which helps the local authority decide where to direct funds.
Her latest fundraising effort is a coffee morning taking place on July 29 with money raised going to an African school.
Hermumadded: “I’m really proud of her.
She has done so well this year and it would be lovely to see her nominated for the award.”
LAST YEAR'S WINNER
Not only is Veronica Freeborn an A* student but she’s also a dedicated carer for her sick mother.
The then 16-year-old, from Dorothy Stringer School, scooped seven A*s and eight As in her GCSEs.
This despite spending months on end in the run up to her exams caring for her ill mother.
The beaming teenager told us on the night that she was “thrilled” to pick up the award.
Her teachers were equally thrilled. Head Richard Bradford said: “We are all delighted by Veronica’s results, which demonstrate what can be achieved with hard work and determination.”
