A former police special is calling on top cops to save a community station.

As part of cost-cutting measures to replace standalone stations with front desks and offices inside other public and private buildings, Sussex Police unveiled plans to close 18 stations last month.

Among them was the centre in Ham Road, Shoreham.

Determined to save a building where she used to work as a special constable, Mary Frankel created a home-made banner calling for police bosses to think again on its proposal.

Ms Frankel, of Station Road, Portslade, said: “With all the violence going on these days in Shoreham, the public need this station to stay for their own safety.

She added: “With the way things are going, officers will probably end up working in a phone box.”
