Police have launched an investigation after claims a traveller drove his vehicle at a council liaison worker.

A group of about 30 vehicles moved onto Stanmer Park in Brighton on Thursday.

But when officials from Brighton and Hove City Council visited the unauthorised encampment, a member of the community allegedly began shouting at one of the workers.

The traveller is then accused of driving a vehicle at the local authority worker, whose job it is to support the nomadic community.

Sussex Police last night confirmed it had received a complaint and was investigating to see if further action will be taken.

Christina Summer, who represents the area on Brighton and Hove City Council, said the “intimidated and threatened” official was left shaken after the incident.

The dedicated transit site for the traveller community at Horsdean is still not open, nearly three months after maintenance work began.

In addition to the alleged incident, locals in the Stanmer Park area have reported antisocial behaviour in the park in recent days.

Coun Summers, who also is chairman of the Stanmer Park Stakeholders’ Group, said the public toilets in Stanmer Village were not open this weekend after they were left in a “terrible state” and deemed a “public health hazard”.

She added they were to remain locked until the “traveller situation was resolved”.

Coun Summers questioned why Sussex Police did not carry out a Section 61 eviction order, as it had done weeks earlier when vehicles moved onto Wild Park.

A council spokeswoman said: “The majority of travellers at the unauthorised encampment at Stanmer Park left voluntarily yesterday.

“The council started legal proceedings on Friday and will continue with the eviction process if any travellers remain in the park.”

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police received a report that a Brighton and Hove Council staff member felt that a vehicle had been deliberately driven at him at Stanmer Park on Thursday.

“Statements have been taken and are being considered to see if there is evidence to support police action.”
