A gastropub chain has closed its doors for good.

The Tin Drum in Hove has been snapped up by entrepreneur David Day for an undisclosed sum after going into administration.

The restaurant was the last in the chain to be sold by husband and wife team Vicky and David Radtke.

The company was launched in 2003, with the couple later buying a small farm in Upper Dicker, near Hailsham, to supply the restaurants, planting hundreds of vegetables.

The family also reared pigs and chickens and smoked the meat for the charcuterie themselves.

But its bar in Fiveways closed in 2008 and the pub in St James's Street was sold to the Co-Operative chain two years later.

The restaurant in Seven Dials changed its name to the Tin Drum Charcuterie before being sold and renamed The Cow.

The final premises, a bar in Second Avenue, Hove, will now become part of The Golden Lion Group, established in the 1980s by David Day and his family, after Drum at the Dials Ltd went into administration on July 22.

The group has seven pubs across the city including The Cricketers, in Prince Albert Street, Colonnade Bar in New Road and Hove Place in First Avenue.

The Argus:

Leo Day of The Golden Lion Group said: “The Golden Lion Group prides itself on providing quality food and drink in a welcoming atmosphere and playing a significant role within the local community.

“We are delighted to have taken over such a popular venue within the heart of Hove.

“We'll look to retain the features that have proved successful at Tin Drum Hove whilst injecting some much needed TLC to bring it back to its former glory.”

Andy Pear, from administrators BM Advisory, said: “The sale of The Tin Drum Hove has been a fantastic result, to ensure the retention of the workforce and the continuation of a business that serves the local community.”

Neither David nor Vicky Radtke was available for comment when The Argus went to press.
