Pieces of plastic dumped on our famous beach will be used to create a supermarket-come-art exhibition.

Lou McCurdy and Chloe Hanks, dubbed the ‘dirty beach artists, ’ will be using waste plastic collected from Brighton beach to create an “eerily spectacular supermarket” that aims to encourage the public to use plastic in more environmentally friendly ways.

The creative duo will exhibit their plastic supermarket for six weeks at the Onca Gallery in Brighton from November 14 – but need to raise around £2,000 for re- branding and re-packaging of the collected plastic.

The pair have so far raised more than £1,000.

When complete, however, the supermarket will “subvert the mundane shopping experience and inspire people to use plastic sustainably.”

Lou McCurdy said: “We’ve had rubbish donated to us by the Brighton and Hove City Council’s beach cleaners, guys from the Marine Conservation Society and the National Trust too.

“The problem with plastic is that people have become de-sensitised to how it affects the environment.

“We are presenting it in a different context and showing people ‘this is where it ends up.’

“It’s going to be tongue-in-cheek and entertaining but have a serious message also.

“It’s not about me or Chloe, it’s about highlighting what single use, throwaway plastic is doing to our beaches and the environment.”

The art exhibition follows The Argus’s Take It Home campaign to encourage residents and visitors to Brighton and Hove to take their rubbish home with them after a visit to the beach.

A ‘big beach clean-up’ in July saw hundreds of  volunteers collecting rubbish from Brighton beach early one Monday morning.

Volunteers collected half a tonne of rubbish in just one hour – enough to half fill one of the cagesided Cityclean vehicles.

Lou added: “We saw The Argus Take It Home campaign and fully support it. We hope our exhibition also contributes to bringing the problems of beach litter to everyone’s attention.”
