Hundreds braved the weather to welcome the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Newhaven this morning.

The Royal couple were flown in by helicopter around 10.30am before being given a tour of the West Quay Fisheries.

They then spoke briefly with well-wishers before being driven to the next stop of their Sussex tour.

Fisheries boss Ian Bickerstaff, who showed the pair around, said: “What a lovely couple.

"They were so interested in the fish and were asking where they came from and when they were caught.

“It was an honour to have them here.”

The visit comes following a tough few days for the town with teenager Dylan Alkins still missing at sea.

Both the Queen and the Duke met with representatives of the local coastguard and RNLI and thanked them for their efforts.

Paul Legendre, from the Newhaven RNLI crew, said: “They were both very nice.

"She congratulated us on a brilliant job searching for the boy.

"She said she had seen footage on TV.

“It has been a tough week and our condolences go out to the family.”
