Withdean Stadium in Brighton is known chiefly as a running track and as the former temporary home of the Albion.

But when it first opened in the late 1930s, it was as the Sussex County Tennis Ground. The centre court grandstand could take 4,100 spectators and there were many other courts, all in immaculate condition.

Built by Brighton Council at a cost of £40,000, it did not prove to be commercially viable despite being promoted as the tennis centre of the South. A Davis Cup match against New Zealand was held there in 1939.

This unusual picture of it comes from a 1938 council handbook kindly lent to me by David Sewell of the Pavilion Gardens cafe.
