Changes have been made to a new £1 million road project just weeks after it became fully operational.

Brighton and Hove City Council has tweaked the road layout in Lewes Road, Brighton, with a number of additional safety measures brought in.

The Argus had reported concerns from motorists who described the newroad layout as “lethal” after it became fully operational at the start of last month.

But council officials denied the changes were due to any increase in accidents and said that such tinkering was normal for any major project.

The new bus and cycle lanes in Lewes Road are part of a £6.2 million project to boost sustainable transport use in the area.

Last month it became fully operational with only buses and taxis allowed to use the inner lanes on the dual carriageway.

Concerns were raised about the approach to the junction of the eastbound carriageway of Lewes Road and Coldean Lane where motorists had to drive across the bus and cycle lanes to access the exit.

Changes to the road in the past week have extended this approach while more cyclist signs and changes to traffic light sequences have been added.

Steve Percy, of the People’s Parking Protest, said: “They shouldn’t have to make adjustments, they pay consultants who should foresee problems.

“The problem is these schemes are drawn up on a computer rather than with real experience of the roads.”

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: “The changes were made as part of our ongoing monitoring programme of the new bus and cycle lane scheme.

“It is quite normal to review the operation of a new scheme once it has been implemented.

“The changes at Coldean Lane were made in response to feedback from users of the route as well as officers’ observations on site.

“A number of other minor modifications have also been made in the weeks since the scheme opened, including additional cycle symbols to highlight the presence of the cycle lane behind the bus stops, minor lining alterations at other junctions and changes to the synchronisation of some traffic lights.”
