Whisky and cigarettes are the secret to longevity, according to a popular pensioner who celebrated her 100th birthday this week.
Dorothy Howe, also known as Dot, from Saltdean, celebrated her milestone birthday yesterday with friends, family and a glass or two of her favourite Bell’s whisky.
Her big day included celebrations at Cullens Bar at Brighton Marina before being showered with an abundance of flowers, presents and cards – including a special birthday wish from the Queen.
Dot, who moved to Saltdean in 1984, said: “I’ve had a fabulous day with very lovely people.
“I’ve had so many flowers and gifts and have been surrounded with my loved ones, it’s been wonderful.
“I received a card from the Queen which I’ve framed and put on the wall.
“I was so nervous opening it when I saw her face on the front.
“She looks so friendly in the picture. I was delighted with it.”
Asked what the secret to her success was, Dot said: “Whisky and cigarettes.
“I only drink when I’m out but my doctor said I wouldn’t be alive without them,” she joked.
“I’m still alive and I can lift my elbows – it’s great. I’ve had a great life and God has treated me very well. I’ve been very lucky.”
Dot has no children but was happily married to her late husband Peter, who was 20 years her junior.
Originally from Essex, she had a “wonderful” career working closely as an assistant with the former chairman of Martin’s Newsagents.
Lynn Sass, Dott’s friend, described the perky pensioner as someone who was “thought very highly of.”
She said: “She has the respect and friendship of a lot of people around here.
“She’s wonderful and a great character.
“She’s thought very highly of and we hope she’s had a great time. It’s a real achievement for a great woman.”
