Masons was the most popular bike shop in Brighton in the years when many people rode to and from work.
Ex-policeman David Rowland, who had this picture in his collection, estimated that about 60% of Brightonians bought their machines there. The impressively large shop stood on the corner of Lewes Road and Franklin Road.
Mr Rowland recalls buying a bike there for police work which entitled him to an allowance of 25p a week.
It may not sound like much but Mr Rowland says that new bikes in the years after the war generally cost less than £10 and would last for years.
