As a one-time resident of Brighton and Hove, I’m lucky to have friends there who keep me in touch with what’s happening in the city by the sea, and with the reports in your newspaper.

I was fascinated by Michael Parker’s recent letter about the ordinary, everyday objects which have inspired great pop songs. It set me thinking, as I’m sure it did for many of your readers.

To add to Mr Parker’s list, everyday things feature in many of the titles of Rolling Stones songs: Paint It Black, Brown Sugar and Tumbling Dice come to mind. They even wrote about ventilators in one of the best tracks on Exile On Main Street – Ventilator Blues!

Well done, Mr Parker.

Michael Parker’s letter about unusual contents of popular songs reminded me of a number called Jenny’s Ball, which we used to play when I was with my old band, Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra.

There were references to a frying pan, a bloke with a “pocketful of mirrors” and something about a “big bow-wow”.

I never understood it then and when I heard the boys play it recently (at The Ropetackle during their 45th anniversary concert), I still didn’t get it – but of course they’ll tell you that I was never awfully bright.
