After the splendid concert on New Year’s Eve by the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, chaos reigned in the theatre car park as dozens of frustrated concert-goers tried to pay the concessionary fee of £5, offered to theatre users who had entered the car park after 2pm.

Brighton Dome had provided us with the additional card needed to obtain the cheaper rate as opposed to the quoted fee of £18.10.

The situation was a total disgrace, with the system clearly unable to cope and no NCP staff on hand to assist or to explain what was happening.

At the end of the concert, Barry Wordsworth had made a heartfelt appeal to the audience to support the orchestra so that its regular winter performances and, in particular, the New Year’s Eve concert will continue to be financially viable.

If the public is to be encouraged to support what is one of the city’s most prestigious assets, namely the BPO, then the scenes we experienced on New Year’s Eve must not be repeated.
