At this time of year we all tend to make New Year resolutions. I hope that Councillor Pete West, chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee, has made a resolution to look more generously at a campaign for a school crossing along Church Road and St Andrew’s Road for St Peter’s School in Portslade.

The amount and type of traffic at this spot creates an unacceptably high risk for vulnerable citizens.

There have been numerous incidents and near misses with children and vehicles. Over the past 30 years parents and workers at St Peter’s School have asked for improved crossings and a “lollipop lady”.

St Peter’s has also become a primary school, thus doubling its intake over the next three years. There are also three new residential developments in action and more in planning, so an increase in footfall and use of services is expected.

More than 800 residents have put their voice to the campaign and this Tuesday the committee will hear further analysis and reports regarding traffic and footfall.

I hope that, if the reports demonstrate an unacceptable risk, Coun West acts swiftly to install the safety measures which the community so fervently desires.
